I like to start with a discussion about "The American Dream" and what that idea means for them.
We create a "Metaphorm," which is a three-dimensional representation of their interpretation of the American Dream. Then, students write a paragraph to explain the symbolism in their metaphorms.

While students read the novel, they have reading guides, such as the ones below. These help students focus on themes and ideas as they read rather than simply thinking about summary. These resources take more time to make, but ultimately get the best thinking out of students.
