"Whying" It Out
Whying it out is a process that was introduced to me by my former colleague at Bright Star Schools, Gabriel Ramirez. He was an excellent teacher of writing, and he gave me more confidence in my pursuit of teaching academic writing. I've since amended the worksheets and steps in the process to my curriculum, but the essence and basic principals remain.
The premise of the "Whying It Out" curriculum is to enhance student analysis beyond summary, and the results are amazing!
Step one: Active Reader - a chart that helps guide students in collecting evidence as they read literature.
Step two: Lots of "Whying It Out" practice & paragraph writing
Step three: Discussion (usually Socratic Seminar, sometimes Philosophical Chairs)
Step four: Essay planning sheet
Step five: Whying out evidence
Step six: Writing a structured response essay
